   The Shi'a school of thought

A Muslim school of thought asserting the legitimate authority of 'Ali and his literal descendents.

Shi'a began as a political faction supporting 'Ali, the son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), and 4th caliph of the Muslim Community. In 661 c.e. 'Ali died in a violent attack.

Shi'a is a minority in the global Muslim community with strong presence in Iran and Iraq. There are adherents as well in Yemen, Syria, Lebanon, East Africa, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.

Alevi is one of a number of groups within Shi'a.
